Blanche, Science and Math Fair
When my wife Blanche comes home from work, we walk for about 30 minutes on the road leading to our residence. It is refreshing in the chilly evenings and we get a chance to chat about our day, hold hands and generally make a “short date” of each bit of time we get together. Oh by the way, we celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary on November 5th. While my typical day may consist of emails, phone calls, meetings, and what we refer to as, data calls, her days are usually very rapid-fire in a proactive as well as reactive posture. She works hard. In fact, I think she gets a high from the non-stop challenges which take place at Colleton Middle School almost on a daily basis. But again, just to serve in a classroom is a challenge in and of itself, so when you get a chance, hug a teacher and tell them how much they are appreciated. |
Hall of Fame question draw mixed reviews
| 10-1-09 Dispatch Roundtable Question “Why is Walterboro High School late greats Jay Davis and Gianni Garrett not in the Colleton County Football Hall of Fame? These are players that teamed with James Walker and Norman Hand and were just as productive if not more productive.” Last week’s roundtable discussion proved to be a hot topic amongst local football fans. We have received several responses from our readers concerning the timeliness or should I say lack of timeliness of the debate about Colleton County Hall of Fame inductees. It appeared that some of our readers felt it was inappropriate to pose a question about the Colleton County Hall of Fame on the day before four athletes were scheduled to be inducted. Many felt it showed a lack of respect to the four honorees. |
The Dispatch resumes publication and distribution
| A Note from the Publisher Phillip M. Taylor, Sr. Wow! The last two weeks have provided an opportunity for Wanda and I to explore many aspects of The Dispatch. We sincerely appreciate the patience of our supporters with the brief interruption in the distribution of The Dispatch through that time span. |
Press and Standard incorrect about The Dispatch
| A news article printed on page 6 in the July 28, 2009 edition of the Press and Standard is a far cry from factual. Once again, Adnaw Publishing, LLC will suspend publication of the newspaper until strategic planning is successfully completed.
The Taylors are not and have not been attempting to sell The Dispatch. The Taylors did not list the newspaper for sell at any time, not even on the GlobalBX internet business exchange for $205,000. We have not reported $103,000 in revenue, either. George Salsberry contacted me last week and I responded to him in writing through an email transmission. He listed my responses in the third, fourth and fifth graphs of his article. The entire email transmission reads: |
Editorial: A Call for Peace
| Recently, people have questioned what can be done to put an end to the recent escalation in violence within Colleton County. While I agree that a community should employ a multi-pronged approach to encourage civility, my personal belief is that true peace can only be achieved through man’s submission to the Will of God. A basic concept is that a person should demonstrate love to a neighbor in proportion to the love one has for themselves. |

Vision Statement:
I have a vision that we can Believe Again in the hopes and dreams that lay dormant for some. I believe that we can begin to believe in each other. I want citizens to Believe Again in today’s students. Believe Again that they possess the human and social capital to create positive realities and help sustain our community. It is my hope that the the citizens will Believe Again in the officials they elect to positions of government. I believe that I can bring a fresh perspective to the City of Walterboro. As Mayor of City of Walterboro, I would like to improve relations with county government. I would like to help diversify the city’s economy through promoting agro-tourism and expanding our capacity at our regional airport. A business development center may foster job creation and successful small business entrepreneurship. I would like to promote the creation of higher wage employment opportunities. I would liketo encourage strategies that promote successful home ownership. Citizens deserve fair, equitable, and transparent government. I would also like to enhance the City’s relations with the public school system through cooperative communication. I would like to promote the idea that wisdom and education can be a catalyst for achieving dreams. I would like to raise awareness about health and wellness strategies for the citizens. Health professionals have recognized an epidemic level crisis in childhood obesity, high blood pressure, and other ailments. QUALIFICATIONS

| “Our children are people too.” This casual, sometimes tongue in-cheek remark often belies the way in which adults actually think about children. |

People visited the polls in droves on Saturday to cast their vote for the democratic presidential primary election. Chandler?s Corner: I?m Choosing Freedom

Derrell J. Chandler, Author
Choosing freedom is hard but it is supported by God?s promise ?Faith is the substance of things?? which is one of my most favorite quotes from the Bible. It is with faith that mankind has flown to the stars, built railroads and created industries that never existed before. Read the rest of this entry »

Letters to the Editor: Payday Loans
Dear Sir:
Many thanks for your excellent article on Payday loans. This company is one of many in this and other countries which prey on those least able to afford them. In fact, the entire predatory lending operations runs the gamut from credit cards to mortgage companies, and they are all meant to gouge the customer.
