The much anticipated Quick 8 Racers Association Inaugural event was held at Orangeburg DragStrip on August 28th, 2010. The man that sat in Victory Lane Saturday night after the smoke cleared was Greg Godwin in the G & B Motorsports ‘63 Corvette.
“This was the first race with the new Fulton Engine,” stated Godwin “It ran really good considering we didn’t have any data on it. This engine has a lot left in it. We haven’t even started to use the power that it has.”

With the third and final round of qualifying complete it was Team Bladerunner and driver Troy Jordan who got the pole position with a 3.956 at 186.80. Greg Godwin came from the number two spot with a 3.976 at 184.64. Third on the sheet was Tommy Mauney with a 3.997 at 185.41. Ric Fleck grabbed the fourth slot with a 4.045 at 180.00.

Leading the bottom half of the field was James Linton Jr with a 4.069 at 175.50. Chris Patrick put his Willys in sixth with a 4.070 at 178.71. Brian Neal was seventh with a 4.108 at 175.85. Anchoring the field was Josh Chester with a 4.119 at 176.20. Missing the field was, Sonny Tindal, Jamie Hancock, Buzz Varner, Don Benton, Carol Long and David Ross.

The first pair out for the first round of eliminations was Ric Fleck and Josh Chester. Josh ran into tire shake while Ric posted the quickest Pro Charger equipped door slammer a 4.008 at 180.65. Next up was Tommy Mauney and Brian Neal. On paper this should have been Tommy’s race but it just wasn’t meant to be. Brian got off the line first and got to the finish line first running a 4.113 at 174.28 while Tommy got loose and posted a 4.118 at 160.25. Eventual winner Greg Godwin had Chris Patrick for his first round opponent. Greg posted a 3.937 at 185.26 while Chris slowed to a 4.311 at 133.13 because of a broken rear end. The last pair up was Troy Jordan and James Linton. James turned on the red light while Troy blasted down the 1/8 mile with a 3.937 at 186.64.

When Don Garrick called the remaining Pro Mods to the staging lanes forthe semifinals it was Greg Godwin and Ric Fleck up first. Ric got off the line first but Greg quickly made up the difference with the quickest pass of the night, a 3.916 at 186.80 to put him in the final round. Ric slowed from his first round time and posted a 4.028 at 179.92. The other half of the semifinal round was Troy Jordan and Brian Neal. Troy had been much quicker than Brian all night so Brian new that he had to get off the line first. Brian left too early though turning on the red-light while Jordan ran a 3.929 at 187.42 to punch his ticket to the final round.

With the final round set it looked to be a great race. It was a classic Blower vs. Nitrous race to see who would pick up the win. These two cars were separated by only one hundredth of second going into the final round, Greg with a 3.916 and Troy with a 3.929. Greg got lane choice do to his quicker time and chose the left lane. The two drivers did their burnouts and their team members put them in the beams. All the fans rose to their feet and anxiously waited to see the out come of this race. The tree activated and the ambers turned to green and they were off. Troy got loose and had to lift while Greg got the win with a 3.943 at 187.42. Troy slowed to a 4.032 at only 158.16.

Troy Jordan was gracious in defeat and said, “I want to thank Terry and Terri Green for giving me the opportunity to drive this car and a big thanks to my lovely wife Dea for putting up with me and letting me race. This is one huge team effort. Without Terry and Terri Green, my Father Gene, Victor, Rita, and the rest of the crew none of this would be possible. Also, Darrell Makins from Under Pressure Performance has been a huge asset to this team and we want him to know how we appreciate him. I want to thank Orangeburg Drag Strip and their staff, Alan Pittman Race Cars and RPM Magazine for their continued support.”

“I really want to thank Buddy Boozer for giving me this opportunity,” continued Greg Godwin “He is a great car owner. Anything that we need, we get it. He doesn’t second guess me at all. I want to thank my wife Jan for her support over the years. I also want to thank Timmy Clifton Sr and Jr, Misty Clifton, Mike and Michelle Butler. Also, thanks goes out to Gene Fulton for building us a strong engine. It still has a ton of potential. Tommy Mauney built is a real good car and we appreciate that. Pat Norcia from Ram Clutches has been a supporter of ours for while now and we want him to know how much we appreciate him. The staff here at Orangeburg is great. Buddy has all the right people in the right place and you can tell it. The next race for us is the ADRL at Rockingham Dragway next weekend. We’re hoping for the same success there.”
Also, for this race there will be no association fee.”

Orangeburg Drag Strip is known as one of the best tracks, if not the best in the Southeast. There have been many racers that race all over the country come away from Orangeburg saying that. The staff at Orangeburg led by Buddy Boozer will make sure that there will be plenty bite. Thus, far this weekend forecast also promises to be great racing weather.

With the strong list of drivers that are expected to be there you don’t want to miss this race. Look for Buzz Varner, Ric Fleck, Danny Blankenship, Sonny Tindal, Greg Godwin, Tommy Mauney, Chris Patrick, Ronnie Gardner, Dewayne White, Darrin Hoyle just to name a few. There will be more drivers announced this week. This is shaping up to be a great event that any drag racing enthusiast would not want to miss.

The track will be open Friday night for test and tune. Saturday the gates open at 12:00 with the first round of qualifying at 2:00, the second round at 3:30 and the third calibrations at 5:00. The action picks up at 7:00 with the first round of eliminations. Admission is $15.00 and children 12 and under free.

A program designed to keep children on the move during their summer school break had the final game of its’ seventh season last Wednesday.

Approximately 187 children mainly between 7 and 12 years old participated in this year’s Summer Flag Football program which was developed by SC State University 1890 Extension and co-sponsored by CoCoRec and the Walterboro Shrine Club. Many of the coaches, referees and other aids involved with the program volunteered throughout the summer to help young cheerleaders and football players stay physically active.

A spokesperson for the youth initiative said that the first week of the training camp gives the young athletes an opportunity to be exposed to some of the drills being used with the high school football program. By the season’s end, most players are in shape physically to participate in the school and CoCoRec sports programs.

Each game welcomed parents, family and friends who gathered at the old Cougar Football Stadium to witness the action. With games taking place on multiple fields, it was common to see some spectators viewing the action from several different sidelines in one night.

The Johnson Agency Yellow Jackets defeated the Forest Hills Jets, sponsored by Deacon Leon Bastian, in the 10-12 year old Championship game. The T & J Creations Rattlers and Abe’s Pet Grooming & Boarding Aggies were both eliminated in the first round of the playoffs held Monday. The Changes Organization Bulldogs won the 7-9 year old Championship game after defeating the Hampton Inn Pirates participated in the season finale with the Yellow Jackets clinching the championship. Not advancing in the playoffs in this age group were the Exclusive Concepts Tigers and Hodges Roofing Hurricanes. The Summer Flag Football program provides access for the students to participate free of charge.

Magnum a very skilled and ambitious opponent took advantage of the moment and went to work on Benjamin. Benjamin took everything that Magnum could dish out and Magnum got the two count several times.

The fans were furious because of the punishment that Benjamin was enduring. Several neck breakers, figure fours, power drivers, several low blows and power slammed off the top rope. Benjamin must have heard one of the little old ladies yelling “please get up, please get up Benjamin,” he rose to his feet and began to kick Magnum’s bootie and rose victorious for the three count. The fans went WILD.

A special moment of silence was recognized in memory of the late Lillie Jackson of Bowman, SC who was a dedicated fan. Also thanks to CWA Great Jay Batista and Promoter/Owner Roger Gleaton for honoring her request to receive a visit from the wrestlers at her bedside in the hospital.

ORANGEBURG, SC – Even though it took two days to finish the Quick 8 Outlaws race at Orangeburg Drag Strip no one could stop the pair of Danny Blankenship and Tommy Mauney. Danny asked Tommy to shoe his ‘40 Ford because of a family commitment. These two have proven in the past that when they are together, they are a dangerous duo.

“Everybody thinks that this car has a good tune up in the heat,” Mauney said “When we get to run this car when it cools down, it’ll really show them what it runs what it will really run. I mean this car ain’t no 3.95 car. It’s a 3.89 or 88 car and that’s with the powerglide. We’ve got a really good tune up for this car. It’s a lot like the set up that we had in Danny’s ‘41 Willys and his purple Corvette.”

With the second and final round of qualifying complete Blankenship’s red ‘40 with Tommy Mauney behind the wheel sat atop the sheet with a 3.960 at 183.29. Reigning Quick 8 Outlaws champion Troy Jordan was 2nd with a 4.060 at 180.65. The quickest Nitrous assisted Doorslammer in the field was the current point’s leader Shay Loveday with a 4.081 at 177.72 that got the 3rd spot. Quick 8 Outlaws President Ric Fleck qualified his Pro Charger equipped Corvette 4th with a 4.103 at 179.35. Coming from the 5th slot was Dwayne “the Hogfarmer” Silance with a 4.111 at 178.71. Former Quick 8 Outlaws Champion Dennis Jordan qualified 6th with a 4.136 at 1754.35. Kenny Kneece qualified the Joker’s Wild Vette 7th with a 4.160. Steve Bray put his Ford Mustang in the 8th spot with a career best 4.181 at 173.14.

Robbie Matthews who finished 2nd in points last year qualified Kip Kauffman’s Blown ‘57 Chevy in the 9th position with a 4.232 at 171.89. Coming out of the 10th spot was Shawn Jenkins with his 4.259 at 169.42. The “She Devil” Carol Long posted a 4.497 at 144.0 to get the 11th spot. The 12th qualifier was “Wild Bill” DeSoto with a 4.547 at 131.23. Chris Wooten qualified his slammed to ground ‘69 Camaro 13th with a 4.620 at 151.31. Ervin Rose posted a 5.085 at 135.91. Anchoring the field in the 15th slot was James Linton Jr with a 6.888 at 53.09.

When it was time to start the first round of eliminations, there were several cars that had a bye run. They were Tommy Mauney, Bill DeSoto, Steve Bray and Ervin Rose. Ric Fleck and Carol Long was the next pair up. This was Ric’s race from the start. He posted a 4.186 at 178.163.45. Dennis Jordan defeated Chris Wooten with a 4.131 at 176.19 to Chris’ 4.601 at 151.72. Next up was a pair of ‘63 Corvettes, Shay Loveday and Shawn Jenkins. Shawn had a problem his Nitrous while Shay posted an impressive 4.087 at 178.00. Troy Jordan and Robbie Matthews were the final pair in the first round. Robbie ran into tire shake while Troy posted the quickest pass of the first round, a 4.061 at 181.89.

That was all the racing that anyone would get to see on Saturday. The skies opened and the rain set in. Instead of calling the race the decision was made by Buddy Boozer and Faye Allan to finish up eliminations Sunday. At 12:15 Sunday the engines fired up and we were back to racing.

Two racers got bye runs into the semifinals do to their competitors not being able to make the call. First was Tommy Mauney because Bill DeSoto hurt his engine. Ric Fleck got the bye run because Steve Bray couldn’t stay and run on Sunday. Ervin Rose had the tough task of taking on Shay Loveday. Shay posted the quickest time of this round with a 4.069 at 178.00 to Ervin’s 5.033. Next up it was the battle of the Jordans, Troy and Dennis. Dennis got the win light with a 4.118 at 176.12 to Troy’s 4.137 at 178.00.

In the sport of drag racing the quickest car doesn’t always win. Ric Fleck used a hole shot to get the win over Dennis Jordan. Ric left the line first with a .047 light to Dennis’ .054 and his 4.183 at 176.82 was enough to hold off Dennis’ 4.147 at 160.77. Setting in the staging lanes behind Dennis and Troy was Tommy Mauney and Shay Loveday. It was a classic Nitrous vs. Blower race. Shay had lane choice and stuck to the same lane that he had been running all day, the left lane. Shay left the line first but he didn’t have enough to hold off the Blown Ford. Tommy got by Shay with 4.025 at 181.31. Shay posted a 4.100 at 176.74.

The final round was set. Tommy Mauney driving Danny Blankenship’s Blown ‘40 Ford and Ric Fleck in his twin Pro Charged Corvette. After the two did their burnouts, their teams put them on the line. The tree activated and it was Ric with a slight advantage. Ric put up a 4.139 at 178.00 but Tommy posted the best time of the race with a 3.9600 at 183.90 to get the win.

Ric Fleck was very gracious in defeat and said, “We got another runner-up but we are right on the edge of getting a win. We are taking baby steps right now. We finally got the car working, got the chassis working to where we could get a little bit of power out of the motor. Now we’re going back to the chassis to see if we can get more out of it. We have a lot left on the table. This motor is making tons of power. We ran a 4.09 a couple of weeks ago and the car has been consistently running in the low teens since then.”

“I want to thank Darrel Makins from Under Pressure Paerformance,” continued Ric “He has been doing a great job tuning the car. Also, I want to thank Pro Charger for their support. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be able to do this. I also want to thank Cameron at Cameron’s Torque Converter Service. He does an awesome job on our Powerglides and Converters. I want to say thanks to my crew chief Devin Barrick, my crew, Mike Ellis, Chris Krug and Charley Dooley. My family was all down here with us today. My brother n law Dave Eddy and his son Dane were down her all week helping us work on the car. We had to change a blower in between rounds and they all pitched in and helped. It’s a team effort. The Quick 8 Outlaws are a heck of a group and I am very happy to be part of them. Congratulations to Danny and Tommy for the job that they did all weekend. A 3.96 with a powerglide in the heat of the day is very impressive. A .960 sixty foot in the heat of the day is getting it done. So hats off to those guys and that gives us something to shoot for.”

“Well we closed the deal and got us a win today.” Blankenship said “We’ve had the car to beat several times this year with the Ford and Willys and something always happened. We’ve put up a lot of strong numbers all year and today we saved the best for last. We ran a 3.960 in the heat in the finals. I guess that this car loves the heat. When it’s super hot outside it seems to perform best. I want to thank Tommy Mauney for building a great race car and driving for me this weekend. Also, a big thanks to my crew Jimmy Lee, Robbie Sapp, Bruce Woodcock, Chris Wooten and my whole family. I am very glad to see my son Patrick back helping me. I want to thank Buddy Boozer, Faye Allan and Bob and Gina Myers. With out them we couldn’t do this.”

“I appreciate Danny letting me drive his car,” commented Tommy “The Quick 8 Outlaws have a good club and put on a good show. I’ve been to a couple of them and it is always good. Thanks to all the guys that Danny has working him for doing a good job. It’s just a good deal. I want to thank my wife Karen for letting me do this all these years. She and Chris and have put up with this for a lot of years.”

Charles “Chico Mac” McCray, Former WHS B-Ball Standout

“No, Favre loves the game to much; plus the way last season ended for him left a bitter taste in his mouth. I think this is last year.”

Dewayne George, Local Youth Coach

“Personally, I don’t think he’s done. Even if I actually heard him say so myself. Favre plays these games every summer. It’s getting old.”

James Green, Local Youth Coach

“You got a horse in the barn with a mule. The mule kept coming out running his mouth but the horse not coming out the horse not coming. Until that horse stick his head out of the door and say I’m retired or until Minnesota plays that first game of the season; that’s when I will know for sure Brett Favre is not coming back. Brett will take on a ride and then pop up at the last minute because he don’t want to go to training camp and he don’t want to go to OTA’s.”

Simeon Hammonds, Little League Coach

“The Vikings haven’t made it official yet. Besides, his track record.”

Simeon Hammonds, Little League Coach
“Great idea, especially if it cuts into preseason.”

Adam Kinloch, SC State University Student
“From a fan’s point of view it’s great because you get to see two more regular season games. However, players would have two more games of bruising hits that takes tolls on their bodies. Teams are barely healthy after playing a 16 game regular season. It would push more teams to not playing their starters at the end of the season when they already know they have made the playoffs. Nobody wants to see Jim Sorgi in the game at quarterback for the Colts. They want to see Peyton Manning.”

Charles “Chico Mac” McCray, Former WHS B-Ball Standout
“I like it because that’s more football to watch. However, it is not good because key players can get hurt and mess up a team’s chance to win it all.”

Cornelius Hamilton, Local Sports Fan & Contributor
“I like the idea of two more meaningful games. I just think those two more games will be costly. We don’t want this to jeopardize the integrity of the game. If the two more regular season games will lead to more teams benching starters at the end of the season, then the image of the league will be tarnished. An 18 game season will pretty much end any talks of undefeated seasons for anybody. We also have to consider the physical endurance of the players. Again, I like the idea; I just don’t see it working. I like the current 16 game schedule and think it may be the best option realistically.”
