Man dies, Colleton Deputy injured in fatal crash

A Colleton man was killed in a fatal motor vehicle collision Tuesday at approximately 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of Green Pond Highway and Clover Hill Road.

According to Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey, Jacob Wright, 19, of North Charleston, died of head and neck injuries after being partially ejected from a Chevrolet Pick-up that was involved in what appears to have been a head-on collision with a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office cruiser.

Wright’s seven-year-old brother was injured in the accident and transported to the Colleton County Medical Center in Walterboro and later released. His father, Reverend Jake Wright and Deputy Scott McCoy were both extricated from their vehicles by Colleton County Fire Rescue and flown to the Medical University of South Carolina

According to Colleton County Fire Rescue Executive Director Barry McRoy, Fire units from Station # 6 in Green Pond were on the scene within minutes of the Emergency 911 call and confirmed two critical patients trapped in the two separate vehicles and one patient who was DOA. Both vehicles had received heavy damage. Three additional ambulances and two medical helicopters were assigned to the call.

Both vehicles had received heavy damage. ?Firefighter-Paramedics began treating patients in the vehicles until a Rescue unit arrived, then hydraulic rescue tools were deployed to extricate the patients.

The seven year old boy potentially crawled out of the pickup truck and was lying on the ground near the pickup truck. The pickup truck driver, Jake Wright, suffered multiple trauma injuries, with severe injuries to his head and chest. It only took about 5 minutes to extricate him from the vehicle. He was flown from the scene to MUSC by the Meducare helicopter. No one in the pickup truck was wearing a seatbelt.

Deputy McCoy also suffered multiple trauma injuries including leg fractures. He was heavily entrapped in the patrol car. Firefighters worked for 43 minutes to free him from the wreckage. He was flown from the scene to MUSC by the Gold Cross helicopter from Augusta. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and their MAIT Team responded as well.

No current data has been released regarding the cause of the accident.
