Fourth annual academic challenge held

Academics are fun when on a team competing in Colleton County. All three Middle Schools of Colleton County have such teams. Teams representing Colleton, Forest Circle and Ruffin Middle competed in the Fourth Annual Colleton County Academic Challenge held in The Board Meeting Room Thursday, April 16.

The “Academic Challenge “is a form of mental athletics for young people that allows them to have a forum to display their knowledge.. The event began with a welcome and mediations about the importance of academic excellence Next on the program was a written test round, using sealed questions selected by national test designer John Campbell.

After the written round a “Jeopardy” style format was used with the same rules. All three teams had a rotating team of three players each at the buzzers. Questions were read such as,” What name is given to large molecules consisting of hundreds of linked amino acids?” Answer: Proteins The main goal of this event was to cause pride in academic endeavors.

After the written round Ruffin , CMS and Forest Circle were very close in their scores, however during the “Jeopardy” session Ruffin and CMS tied, requiring an extra 30 minutes of questions to decide second place. Ruffin Middle school prevailed. Trophies were presented. and a reception was held for students and staff.
