Police foil bike bandit burglary plot

Walterboro Public Safety Officer Mark Kinsey was on a routine property check Monday night when he was alerted by an audible alarm that helped to foil a burglary attempt.

According to Major Ken Dasen, as of Tuesday, a suspect was not arrested; however, evidence retrieved by law enforcement may lead them to an arrest within a short time.

Reportedly, the officer could hear the sound of the alarm down Old Beach Road so he turned in to check area businesses for any damage or break-ins.

The burglary suspect had already damaged an entryway and telecommunications to Cash and Carry and had begun stealing items. Possibly stunned by the officer’s lights the suspect fled the scene on foot prior to the officer arriving at the facility.

Once Officer Kinsey arrived on scene, he drove up to the side of the building and observed a bicycle sitting on the side of the building. He also observed the garage door as having been forced open. Two packs of cigarettes were located next to the bike but the full amount of merchandise possibly stolen from the facility may be discovered after an inventory is completed.

The officer quickly called for additional law enforcement. Several units arrived within moments to secure the remainder of the building. Officers then entered the incident location through the broken garage door and searched the building for anyone that could have been inside; however, the building was clear.

Any person with information regarding this investigation is encouraged to call 549-1811. The investigation is ongoing.
