COMMENTARY:Kingdom Citizenship VS Church Membership
| The most awesome power and position of national privilege a person can hold is citizenship. By far, citizenship is the most valuable asset a nation can offer a because of the power and privilege it bestows upon all those who has met the requirements to become a citizen. Citizenship is not Membership. Religions, as well as religious organizations, function on membership while Nations and Kingdoms function and require citizenship. |
As an example, let’s look at our border to the south of us to see how citizenship is viewed by our government and the people of Mexico. For years now debates have been raging over the citizenship status of millions of illegal aliens who live and work here in the United States. Rallies in support of these illegal aliens have drawn millions into the streets. It is evident that masses of people from our southern border are clamoring and risking their lives to get into the United States to gain their citizenship. WHY? What draws them? Better Jobs, Higher Pay, Better Healthcare, Greater Opportunity, or just an all around better quality of life. Whatever it is they’re willing to risk their lives to gain their citizenship.
So then, the concept of citizenship should be equally as critical to understand when becoming a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven as it is when becoming a citizen of a nation. All nations and kingdoms operate on laws and principles called their constitution or called the bible that spell out what is required to become a citizen. We as Americans citizens don’t understand the difference between those who have worked or applied to gain their citizenship from those who were born citizens or naturalized citizens. When it comes to becoming a citizen of Kingdom of God, there is no different from becoming a citizen of any other country. Although the Kingdom of God is not a religion, it is a government with its own country, Heaven. It has a constitution, the Bible and Jesus Christ is the King. Referring to Christ let us look at what the prophet Isaiah wrote in Isaiah 9: 6-7:
For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders…Of his increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on to forever. Emphasis added.
Like many other countries, The Kingdom of God has laws and principles concerning citizenship. Once people are taught about the Kingdom of God, and understand what it is they clamor to get in just like the Mexicans. This is what Jesus was referring to when he said in Luke 16:16.
The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the Kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. Once they learn everyone will be forcing their way in. Emphasis added.
The question is, why we don’t see people clamoring to get into the church?
Why does the church as a whole seem to have so little impact in our culture? Why are so many church members are a victim of life’s circumstances? The reason is simple and sad. Most Pastors don’t understand the Kingdom of God, so they don’t preach it or teach it. Bible school and seminaries don’t teach it. Consequently, most church members don’t understand the Kingdom concepts either so they seldom take advantage of their kingdom citizenship rights and privileges.
