When you think of rehab centers and nursing homes you might not think of fun and frolic. However, activities are an integral part of the culture of daily life at Heritage Healthcare of Walterboro (HHW). They serve to address the interests and hobbies of residents and keep things spirited and inspiring while people heal and age in this skilled nursing facility.
One such event took place Friday, November 6, 2009 as residents, friends and family were treated to a fun-filled outdoor Fall Fair in front of the building located at 401 Witsell Street at the corner of Sweat Street. This was just one of a calendar of events created monthly, by the facility’s Acivities Director (DA).
For this event, Department heads and rehabilitation staff members were invited to sign up to man booths for the fishing game, baseball bean bag, the milk-jug game, ring-toss, face-painting and bull’s eye game. In addition to this diversity of activities, Ollie’s Concessions came and feed the residents for free.
Jack and Ollie Wright discounted food prices for staff, friends and family of the residents, who were able to enjoy popcorn chicken, friend mushrooms, french fries, and funnel cake for desert. The facility’s Dietary Manager, Anna Gethers and her staff provided lemonade and RosaAnne Nettles and Geraldine Stephens of Activities designed and managed the day’s festivities. They also took the time to provide “free” popcorn for everyone to munch on.
The event was also supported by Amediysis Home Health, whose local representative Emily Ferrao also sponsors the activities for the Men’s Group at HHW. Mrs. Nettles, the DA told this reporter that she is “always looking for volunteers and donations from the community to help in making our residents feel they are a part of the community also.” She can be reached at (843) 549-5546.
