Colleton schools offer parent workshops

| Today’s schoolchildren attend schools that are practically a world or planet away from where many of their parents attended decades ago. To help bridge the divide, offer support, and develop stronger relations between educators, parents, and students, Colleton schools are offering a variety of parent workshops. |
Parent Facilitator Mrs. Melissa Reeves of Forest Circle Middle School facilitated a Title One Family Session Tuesday evening to provide information to parents that could help them identify potential threats to their child, family and school.
In the wake of recent shootings within the community, Colleton County Sheriff’s Deputy Aristede Sanders conducted an informational workshop on gang activities and evidence-based strategies to keep our children safe. Several items Deputy Sanders showed to parents were sobering and gave them an opportunity to see how easy it could be for a very dangerous situation to seem innocent.
Nurse Melissa West also facilitated a session regarding the H1N1 flu virus. Strategies for prevention and intervention were covered and relevant support materials were given to attendees.
Title One Coordinator Catherine Turner and Tiffany Strong of the Colleton Title One Parent Center said that they are hopeful to make more parent workshops available to parents of schoolchildren as the year progresses.
