Colleton NAACP president urges unity
| Colleton NAACP President Reverend Raleigh Williams voiced appreciation for all ministers throughout Colleton County that have offered counseling and support to victims, victim families, alleged suspects families, community members and schoolchildren.
The Colleton Branch of the National Association of Colored People held its regular meeting on Monday, November 16, 2009. Among topics discussed, at length, was the recent shootings that have taken place within Walterboro and Colleton County. |
SC NAACP State Director Dwight James had a conference with President Reverend Raleigh Williams and 1st Vice President Elder Phillip Taylor to express concerns about the situations surrounding the shootings.
According to Williams, the director would like to see justice prevail for victims, alleged suspects, and the community. The NAACP encourages the public to report criminal activity in their community and also any unlawful tactics by law enforcement.
During Monday’s meeting, organization members agreed with a letter from Ecumenical Ministerial Alliance President Reverend Leon Maxwell encouraging a joint effort to alleviate the issues causing shootings in Colleton County.
Williams said it was evident that many young people have problems and don’t know where to turn for help and that there is also a lack of recreation facilities for youth in the county.
“We do feel that there is a sufficient amount of law enforcement handling these cases,” said Williams. We want the community to know that there is plenty of professional help within in the county.”
President Williams, 1st Vice President Taylor, and Political Action Chairman Robert Mixon attended a joint press conference with Walterboro City Mayor Bill Young last week, as he, along with Governor Mark Sanford, SLED Chief Reggie Lloyd, and other state and local officials assure citizens of their safety.
Williams said that community should seek professional counseling, talk with their pastor, and attend Sunday School. NAACP School Liaison Reverend Major Brown is working with Colleton County Schools to increase a constructive presence of caring adults within Colleton schools.
