Susan Smiles Surviving Childhood Sexual Abuse

Letter to Editor: Recent violence

Across the desk of the Oak Grove Citizens Committee continues to flow the mournful voices of many citizens anxious for closure in the horrible deaths of our brothers and particularly our little sister, Shanijah L.S. Burden

As I stood before the coffin of our little sister, I placed the vows of the Oak Grove Citizens Committee; we shall have closure, and closure we shall have at the utmost.

Closure to us(OGCC) would be insufficient with the arrest and conviction of the person or persons committing the coward acts(shooting). In this matter, let us pursue the law to its’ fullest; “the hand of one is the hand of all”.

After the point of full and complete arrest of the cowards involved in the actual disgraceful attack; we seek further closure.

The weapon(s) AK-47 should’ve not been present in this city in the first place. The hand(s) that provided the weapon(s) should be an integral part of full closure.

If crack-cocaine, which we suspect, was involved; full closure would be to wipe this enemy completely out of this city and county.

We(OGCC) was shocked by Mayor Young’s decision to refuse the Governor’s offer of state of emergency which would’ve given law enforcement broader and needed powers; and additional manpower at their disposal- including the resources of the National Guard. To us, these senseless murders were/are more devastating than a hurricane.

We believe this offer of assistance should be revisited. In a matter as far reaching as this, it seems appropriate to accept all the help you can get.

Additionally, the source of the weapons and suspected drugs should be a major concern of the FBI.

When all of this be done, and full closure is with us; then will we (OGCC) will visit the resting place of our brothers and little sister, saying rest in peace, we have done our duties as we have vowed
