Disabled American Veterans keeping veteran needs in focus

| Some might say that no one can really understand a veteran like another veteran. Members of the Disabled American Veterans Strickland Chapter #55 in Walterboro have a goal to keep their focus on veteran concerns that extend beyond ordinary benefits. But, then again, having a friend care for your need of companionship or even provide aid in the time of need should be ordinary. |
| Those who know Commander Johnnie Holmes know that he has a heart to serve others. Whether he is cooking, driving, attending events, meetings, funerals or other functions, he always seems to find a way to serve others. He will tell you that that is the heart of the 300 members within the chapter where he serves with the Disabled American Veterans.
Members of the organization work in concert to provide various consideration for all veterans within Colleton County each years. They host an annual dinner for all veterans, they provide gift baskets, offer donations to the Veteran’s Victory House, or maybe their just building wheelchair and handicap ramps. According to Holmes, if they see a need, they try to provide assistance to their ability. Holmes said the organization is funded primarily the financial contributions of the citizens within the community. On Saturday, December 5, 2009, several members of the Walterboro Disabled American Veterans facilitated a fund raising post at Reid’s Grocery Store located on Bells Highway in Walterboro. “We really appreciate what the community does for the organization because it is the only source of funds that we receive,” said Holmes. “We have to keep our veterans in focus.” If you missed an opportunity to connect with the Disabled American Veterans at the Reid’s Grocery Store on Saturday and you would like to contribute, please contact Commander Johnnie Holmes at 843-908-2123. |
