Shopping with Santa’s Heroes

| The sound and sight of a trail of public safety vehicles heading west on Bells Highway may have seemed like a cause for concern early Saturday, but it was a more altruistic experience. It was an opportunity for children to go “Shop with Santa’s Heroes.” |
| Angela Stallings of the Walterboro Public Safety Department coordinated the event this year with twenty-one children attending the event.The children paired up with public safety officials at the County Parking Lot and transformed into temporary traffic agents, this was witnessed by their engagement of the warning lights and sirens to carve their way to go shopping at Wal-Mart.
As a trail public safety vehicles approached Wal-mart with lights glaring and siren blaring, several customers said they were assured of a safe shopping experience. Unbeknownst to them, the officials had another goal in mind, to share the joy positive relationships with authority, giving, and making a brighter day for families in need. Colleton County Fire-Rescue was invited to assist with the “Shop with Santa’s Heroes” this year. Six Fire-Rescue employees participated along with twenty-five members of the various Law Enforcement agencies and Walterboro Firefighters to help out the Foster Children in the County. In years past, the annual event was mainly targeted at engaging law enforcement; however, the focus was changed this year to cover all Public Safety agencies. Local businesses and individuals donated the funds to purchase gift cards for the children. Each child was assigned to a least one Public Safety member and escorted in a department vehicle to the Walterboro Wal-Mart at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, December 5th. The children were allowed to shop and select the items of their choosing up to the amount of the gift cards. Wal-Mart also added a discount to make the cards go a little farther. Following the shopping spree, the children were taken to Burger King on Bells Highway where Mr. Cook and his daughter Ms. Stroble donated breakfast for all participants. |
