St. Patrick?s Day celebration a festive fund raising affair at Bennett?s Point

Positioned on one of the southern most pristine landscapes of Colleton County is a picturesque Bennett?s Point, but add the festivities of St. Patrick?s Day complete with altruistic patrons and what a grand affair you?ll experience!

Rain clouds, misty skies, and sand gnats dare interfere with a small town?s 12th Annual St. Patrick?s Day parade, which attracted several hundred people on Saturday, March 15, 2008. Cars and trucks lined streets and coves for nearly a half-mile, stocked with coolers, as a rich aroma of food punished the expectant spectators and participants alike.

In fact, one spectator tried to pay big bucks to gain early access to the food, however, the cooks had to inform him that the food wasn?t ready yet.

The short parade kind of served as a count down for the foot race toward to the food table.

According to one official, the Bennett?s Point Community Services Association obtained record financial receipts of $12,000 through auctions, donations and sales. The contributions are used to fund the Bennett?s Point Fire/Rescue Department, mosquito control and to provide assistance to residents in dire need.

Pheobe Garrett, a resident of Bennett?s Point, actually took time to explain the day?s events and give me tour of the corridor that lined the dock of the Combahee River.

?It?s small, it?s fun, and you don?t mind giving because it is for a good cause,? Garrett said.
